ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Katie James
Business Name: Almaguin Massage Therapy
About Katie:
Katie Howard, RMT has been living and working in the Almaguin
Highlands area as a Registered Massage Therapist for several
years. She loves working and living in this growing community. She
feels fortunate to be able to live here. When not working she is often
found with her family in Magnetawan.
What town do you operate your business/volunteer in?
Sundridge
What do you love about Almaguin, making you want to go
above and beyond in the community?
Almaguin is my home, and it is such a great place to raise a family,
and equally a great place to run a business. I want to continue
to grow in Almaguin, to give the community health care options
close to home, and to bring jobs and career opportunities to
people in the community. So many of our children grow up and
move away from here to start their careers. I want to provide a
great workplace for alternative health care practitioners to start
their practice and stay in the community.
What are you most proud of in your career/ life?
My move into a bigger space in 2021. Although risky, it is something
I am proud of. Sometimes you must take chances in order to see
growth in your business and I’m so glad I did that. It has allowed
more practitioners to join me and a team environment that has
made our clinic accessible to more of the community. This has
also been a transitional time and has set us up to move into yet
another bigger facility this year in Sundridge on HWY 124 where
we plan to stay for many years.
What woman inspires you/ who do you admire the most?
As a female entrepreneur, I feel really passionate about successful
women in business and so many of my friends in this community
are so amazing at their businesses, it’s hard to name just one that
inspires me. If I had to choose one woman in my life who inspires
me, it would be my sister. She runs a successful photography
business (Theresa Morphy Photography) and her creativity and
marketing style have helped her become so successful in that
industry. She continues to amaze me with each opportunity she
gets to grow her business and her fearlessness and strength are
something I admire and strive for.
What message would you have for other women in the
community looking to start up a business/volunteer in the
community?
Don’t play small, and know your worth. Too many women
undercharge for their services. That’s a good way to go out of
business. We all have overhead, and we all want to earn a living,
otherwise, what’s the point? We live in a large community and
there is a market here for new business. Community members are
driving outside of our area for services and paying for it. That tells
you right there that there is a need for new business and growth in
this community. The community wants to support new businesses
and women business owners want to support this community. It’s
a win-win; I’m a huge supporter of women entrepreneurs.
